Our yearly awards honor courageous individuals and innovative groups that have made significant contributions to the cause of human rights and democracy. The Freedom in the World template has been used as a model for other democracy analysis reports published by Freedom House. Currently, Freedom House publishes an annual report on new media freedom, Freedom on the Net, which reaches critical audiences in the tech world and in policy circles. Freedom House also issues a highly respected report on political reforms in the post-Communist sphere, Nations in Transit, and an annual media freedom assessment, Freedom and the Media.

The Global Expansion of Authoritarian Rule
To learn more about Freedom House’s policy positions and advocacy work, visit our Policy Recommendations page. Freedom in the World uses a two-tiered system consisting of scores and statuses. Total scores across the various categories are based on a 100-point scale and correspond to statues of Free, Partly Free, and Not Free. Freedom House is committed to editorial independence and is solely responsible for this report’s content. Advances in artificial intelligence are increasing the scale, speed, and efficiency of digital repression.
It was just insane to be able to see those people in action and be able to work directly with them. Working with actual activists and organizers who are already part of organizations like the Inland Empire Black Worker Center, the Los Angeles Black Worker Center and the SoCal Black Worker Hub was just a great experience. It was only 3 days, but the people I met, the relationships I made, and just being able to see that many Black faces that were dedicated to supporting other Black people was something that you really can’t describe. It felt like the perfect time to be doing something like that because I’ve always struggled with thinking about whether or not my interests are going to match the real world and what’s actually going on.
About the Report
Through its offices worldwide, Freedom House measures civil liberties and political rights in more than 190 countries and several territories; the results are published in reports such as Freedom in the World, an annual survey that first appeared in 1973. Other surveys assess press freedom, conditions in former communist countries, human rights, and women’s rights. Freedom House rates people’s access to political rights and civil liberties in 210 countries and territories through its annual Freedom in the World report. Individual freedoms—ranging from the right to vote to freedom of expression and equality before the law—can be affected by state or nonstate actors. The idea was to build a model so comprehensive it would overcome previous errors in this line of research, such as the underrepresentation of top incomes in surveys. Anti-corruption campaigner Alexey Navalny proved that anyone, after investigative training and practice, can expose rights abuse at the highest levels of government. In that sense, the struggle against anti-democratic forces in the United States — the Trumpist faction of the GOP foremost among them — isn’t just an American issue.

Freedom House worked closely with Thurgood Marshall, Roy Wilkins, and other prominent civil rights leaders. Bayard Rustin, a leading adviser to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was an active member and leader of the Freedom House Board of Trustees. Our annual Freedom Award recognizes outstanding leaders in the cause of freedom and democracy. With programs in nearly 20 countries, Freedom House offers opportunities to grow within the organization, and to learn from the diverse experience of our domestic and international staff.
The Freedom in the World Junior Fellowship program gives young researchers critical work experience in the democracy and human rights field. The nine-month program funds Junior Fellows in core research positions to contribute to this report, and equips them with a range of marketable skills that can propel them on to successful careers. My personal favorite experience was the Black Organizing Institute (BOI). It was essentially a room filled with Black and brown advocates, workers and labor organizers.
After the war, Freedom House supported the creation of the institutions that were critical to the promotion of peace, human rights, and cooperation between nations. Freedom House supported the Marshall Plan, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the Atlantic Alliance. Our work amplifies voices calling for freedom and empowers human rights defenders and civic activists to advance democratic change.
The Renew Democracy Initiative, a Washington D.C.-based nonprofit organization promoting democracy and American interest overseas, sent a letter Friday urging Johnson and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., to work together to get the REPO Act passed. The idea to confiscate the Russian assets, which emerged last year, has been hotly contested by economists and foreign policy experts. Russian President Vladimir Putin and his government invested heavily in the euro and the dollar over the years to keep the ruble stable, planting $300 billion worth of foreign currency reserves. The REPO Act, which would authorize Biden to confiscate the frozen Russian assets in U.S. banks and transfer them to a special fund for Ukraine, is part of the foreign aid package that was stalled for months in the House. More than $6 billion of the $300 billion in frozen Russian assets are sitting in U.S. banks.
